UNDERSTANDING REALITY

Table of Content

1. WHAT IS REALITY?

Reality. It’s one of those words we use all the time, but rarely stop to unpack. What does it actually mean to say something is “real”? And why does it matter? Thinking about reality isn’t just for philosophers or scientists – it’s about understanding the world we live in, and, more importantly, how we each experience that world in our own unique way.

Objective vs Subjective Reality: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Let’s start with the basics. There’s what we might call “real reality” – the stuff that’s out there, whether or not anyone’s around to notice it. This is objective reality: the world as it is, independent of our thoughts and feelings. For example, a tree in a park exists whether you’re looking at it or not. Gravity keeps us anchored to the ground, regardless of whether we believe in it.

But then there’s “experienced reality” – how each of us perceives and interprets the world. This is subjective reality. Think about how two people can listen to the same song: one might feel lifted and inspired, while the other finds it melancholy. Or how a chilly breeze might feel refreshing to one person, but miserable to someone else. Our senses, emotions, memories, and expectations all colour our individual experience of what’s “real”.

How Do We Know What’s Real?

You might wonder: if everyone experiences reality differently, how do we know what’s truly real? Most of us trust our senses – sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell – to give us a window onto the world. But our senses are far from perfect. Optical illusions can trick our eyes, and memories can play tricks on our minds. Sometimes what feels absolutely real to us isn’t “out there” at all – it’s a product of our own perception.

For example, have you ever thought you something moving, only to find it didn’t? Or misheard a word in conversation, convinced you got it right? These little mix-ups show how our brains can fill in gaps, sometimes leading us astray.

The Mind’s Magic Trick: Anil Seth and the Construction of Reality

Neuroscientist Anil Seth, in his book Being You, takes this idea even further. He suggests that what we experience as reality is actually a kind of “controlled hallucination”. According to Seth, our brains are constantly making predictions about the world, using past experiences and sensory input to create a best-guess model of what’s happening around us. We don’t just passively receive reality – we actively build it, moment by moment.

This doesn’t mean everything is an illusion. Instead, it’s a reminder that our experience of reality is shaped by the mind’s interpretations. Seth’s work invites us to see perception not as a direct window onto the world, but as a creative act – one that’s usually accurate, but not infallible.

Living Beyond Illusion: What Does This Mean for Us?

If our reality is partly constructed by our minds, what can we do with this knowledge? First, it encourages humility – we can’t always trust our first impressions or assumptions. It also invites empathy: if everyone’s reality is a bit different, it makes sense that people see things from diverse perspectives. By understanding the gap between objective and subjective reality, we can become more open-minded, adaptable, and compassionate.

Most importantly, this awareness can help us spot our own blind spots and move beyond the illusions that sometimes hold us back. When we recognise that our feelings or beliefs aren’t the only way to interpret a situation, we open ourselves up to learning, growth, and wiser choices.

Conclusion: Embracing Awareness in Everyday Life

Reality isn’t just something “out there”; it’s also something we each create, moment by moment. By paying attention to how our minds shape our experience, we can become more grounded, more curious, and more understanding – towards ourselves and others. In a world full of uncertainty, this kind of awareness is a powerful tool for living more intelligently and authentically.

2. LAWS OF NATURE: HOW UNIVERSAL PRINCIPLES SHAPE OUR LIVES

Understanding reality and implications to better life

Have you ever wondered why things happen the way they do, or how your actions can ripple out and shape your experiences? Much like the intricate networks in your brain, the universe operates according to certain fundamental principles – often called laws of nature. These rules don’t just govern science; they influence everyday life, personal growth, and our sense of connection to everything around us.

What Are Laws of Nature?

Laws of nature are basic rules that describe how the world works. Think of gravity, the way plants grow towards the light, or how energy is conserved – all examples of these laws in action. They’re not invented by humans but discovered through observation and scientific exploration. There are many – ranging from physics (Newton’s laws of motion) to biology (natural selection) and beyond. These laws are formed by consistent patterns in the universe, tested and retested until scientists can confidently say, “This is how things work, everywhere, every time.”

The Law of Attraction

The law of attraction is a popular idea in self-help circles. It suggests that your thoughts and feelings can attract similar experiences into your life – if you focus on positivity, good things will come your way.

Another important aspect to consider is the role of the subconscious mind. Your subconscious can influence your thoughts and feelings in powerful ways, sometimes shaping your reactions without you even realising it. If you have deep-seated beliefs or emotional patterns running in the background, they can interfere with your conscious intentions, making it harder to manifest the outcomes you desire. Bringing awareness to these underlying influences and working to shift them can help align your conscious goals with your subconscious programming, increasing your ability to create positive changes in your life.

The law of attraction truly takes effect and delivers the results you seek when your conscious choices are in harmony with the underlying energy and patterns of your subconscious mind. This is what the essence of law of attraction is.

While it shares the theme of cause and effect, it isn’t a scientific law like those of nature. Instead, it’s more of a mindset principle: what you focus on can shape your actions, attitudes, and ultimately, your outcomes. The law of nature is grounded in observable facts found in nature that operates with automatic processes; the law of attraction is based on combination of conscious intelligence and automatic process e.g. our mental activities, beliefs, intentions, thoughts, feelings and emotions, and psychological influence.

Misconceptions vs Reality

It’s easy to get mixed up. Some people believe the law of attraction is a magic switch – think positive, and life will instantly improve. In reality, it’s not about wishful thinking but about how your mindset influences choices and habits. Similarly, laws of nature aren’t about what we want to happen, but what actually does happen – regardless of our desires. Recognising this helps you move from wishful thinking to practical action.

Understanding and Practicing for Positive Outcomes

If you want to use these laws to your advantage, start with awareness. Notice cause and effect in your daily life – like how regular practice (in sport, music, or study) leads to improvement. Use the law of attraction as a tool to foster positivity and resilience, but pair it with concrete actions. Surround yourself with supportive people, set clear goals, and remember that genuine change comes from both mindset and effort.

Cause and Effect & Interdependence: Everything Is Connected

One key law of nature is cause and effect – every action has a reaction. Drop a ball, and it falls; practise kindness, and you often receive kindness in return. This principle leads to the law of interdependence: nothing in the universe exists in isolation.

Matter of fact, cause and effect is a narrow view of a change focusing on immediate factors with one lens, but interdependence gives us a bigger picture of the universal force. Dr Deepak Chopra explains in details the distinction between these two law of natures.

Just as neural networks overlap in your brain, everything – people, plants, animals, even ideas – are linked. Your choices impact others, and their choices impact you. Embracing this can encourage empathy, cooperation, and a deeper sense of community.

Conclusion:

Understanding the laws of nature, attraction, and interdependence gives you practical ways to shape your life. They remind us that actions matter, mindset matters, and everything is connected. Instead of relying on wishful thinking, combine a positive outlook with consistent effort and respect for universal principles. By doing so, you’ll build habits that support your wellbeing, relationships, and growth – helping you thrive in a world where everything is linked.
